Golf is a popular leisuretime sport for the individual and the family. It provides exercise and the beauty of nature. Golf can be played with or without opponents and usually all year round. A round of golf is about 6-7 km lasts approximately 4 hours.
The game itself is about hitting the ball from the tee-off and into a round 108 mm diameter hole, using one or more strokes. A round of golf is normally 18 holes, but can also be as little as 9.
Rules In order to play the game as fair as possible, a common set of rules is used. These rules are maintained and controlled by The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of Sct. Andrews, who revises and interpets it along with the handicap system (HCP). In princip there are two types of golf: Holegame and strokegame. In holegame you play for the individual hole, the point being winning more holes than your opponent. Strokegame is about winning the entire course.
The history of golf When and whre gold was inventet is impossible to say. Most experts agree that it has its beginning in Scotland in the early part of the 14th century, while others point out records of even older golf-like games in Holland and Belgium.
Regardless of its origins, it was however in Scotland that the game first became popular. In fac so popular that the king of Scotland James II in 1457 was forved to ban the game. England was threatening to attack Scotland and the king did not think it a good idea for young men to spend their time playing golf, when they could be practicing archery and swordfighting. This was the first example of the facination for the game, because the scottish men kept on playing disregarding the kings orders. In 1502 the game was again legalised.
After this the game spread to the rest of the Brittish Isles and to both genders. Queen Mary Stuart was the first female playing golf, which had tragic consequenses for her life. She was seen on a golfcourse in 1567 only a few days after her husbands death. That did not go down well with the church, and she ended up being decapitated in 1587. Not only for playing golf ofcourse. Before she met her violent end, she introduced the game to her native country of France, and the queen can take credit for bringing golf to the mainland of Europe.
